Australian bushfires: when two degrees is the difference between life and death
by: Tim Flannery
Tuesday 10 February 2009 11.21 GMTThe day after the great fire burned through central Victoria, I drove from Sydney to Melbourne. For much of the way – indeed for hundreds of miles north of the scorched ground – smoke obscured the horizon, entering my air conditioned car and carrying with it that distinctive scent so strongly signifying death, or to Aboriginal people, cleansing.
It was as if a great cremation had taken place. I didn’t know then how many people had died in their cars and homes, or while fleeing the flames, but by the time I reached the scorched ground just north of Melbourne, the dreadful news was trickling in. At first I heard that 70 people had died, then 108. Then 170. While the precise number of victims is yet to be ascertained, the overall situation at least is now clear. Australia has suffered its worst recorded peacetime loss of life. And the trauma will be with us forever.

Meet the World’s Youngest Apple IIGS Programmer
Ding Wen already has an app in the App Store By Filip Truta, Apple News Editor

5th of February 2009, 09:29 GMTLim Ding Wen, a Malaysian living in Singapore, is a 9-year-old iPhone developer. His app, Doodle Kids, has been approved by Apple and is currently available for free download through the iTunes App Store. The app was originally developed for the Apple IIGS and was ported to the iPhone for more kids to enjoy.
Lim Ding Wen is very interested in programming. He started learning to write code at age 7 and is probably the world’s youngest Apple IIGS programmer, reads a virtualgs report. Ding Wen is now a bona fide iPhone developer, “with his software Doodle Kids selling in Apple App Store,” the post misinforms. That’s right, “misinforms” because Doodle Kids is completely free to download and use on an iPhone or iPod touch. According to the same post, Ding Wen is now an ActionScript and JavaScript programmer. He is also said to understand Applesoft BASIC, GSoft BASIC, Complete Pascal, Orca/Pascal and a little Objective-C.
Doodle Kids is Ding Wen’s first event-driven program written for the Apple IIGS. Since the actual computer is now out of everyone’s reach, the program can be run on a multitude of emulators. There are a few good Apple IIGS emulators like Mac OS X: Sweet16, Mac OS 9: Bernie ][ The Rescue, KEGS for Windows and Linux and a Web-based emulator working on Firefox or IE on PC called ActiveGS.
Particularly, Doodle Kids is a full screen painting program for kids to draw random shapes and colors. Kids clear the screen for a new drawing session by pressing the Delete key. To do color cycling, the Space key is used, while ESC quits the program (unfortunately, controls for the iPhone version aren’t disclosed). Ding Wen has written Doodle Kids for his younger sisters. It is designed and written completely by himself.
Doodle Kids is compatible with iPhone and iPod touch and requires iPhone 2.2 Software Update. Use the link below to download the application.
