Ubuntu Manga comic now in English

Japanese Manga comics are hugely popular in that country and cover just about every topic imaginable from sport, to romance, to business, to games. Now there is a Ubuntu Manga comic – called Ubunchu – which has been translated from the original Japanese into English and focuses on three students getting into Ubuntu in their school computer club.

Originally written by Hiroshi Seo, the comic has now been translated by two ubuntu-jp LoCo members – Fumihito Yoshida and Hajime Mizuno – and DoctorMo into English and released.

The comic can be downloaded as a PDF (4.4MB) and there are also source files for others that want to translate the comic further.

This is not the first time comics have been used to promote open source software. Back in 2005 Schoolnet Namibia created its own series of comics, called Hai Ti!, to encourage students to use open source software.

Exxon Mobil overtakes Wal-Mart to top Fortune 500

NEW YORK: Exxon Mobil has unseated Wal-Mart Stores to top the 2009 Fortune 500 list after a year the magazine called the worst ever for the 500 largest U.S. publicly traded companies.

Fortune ranks companies by revenue. Exxon shrugged off plummeting oil prices to take the No. 1 spot with $442.85 billion in revenue in 2008.

Wal-Mart had held the top spot for six of the last seven years.

The retail giant slipped to No. 2, with $405.6 billion in revenue.

Fortune released the list on Sunday, calling 2008 the worst year for the 500 companies on its closely watched list.

It says earnings fell 85 percent – the biggest one-year decline in the list’s 55-year history. – AP

“Pork”-ish truth : Waspada serunding babi di pasaran

Waspada serunding babi di pasaran

Awas!

bullet buttonDendeng/abon sapi (lembu) gurih cap Kepala Sapi 250 gram
bullet buttonAbon/dendeng sapi cap Limas 100 gram (keluaran syarikat palsu)
bullet buttonAbon/dendeng sapi asli cap ACC
bullet buttonDendeng sapi istimewa berjenama Beef Jerky Lezaaat (keluaran MDC Food Surabaya)
bullet buttonDendeng sapi Istimewa No 1 cap 999 (keluaran S Hendropurnomo Malang).

YTL Residence Kuala Lumpur

Image

Paris-based Agence Jouin Manku took on its first large-scale integrated architectural and interior design commission in 2003, when YTL Design Group from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, invited it to design the residence of a Malaysian power family.

Image

Completed in the latter part of 2008, the residence is the ultimate expression of the taste, influence and industrial-scale capabilities of the prominent family whose entrepreneurial activities have shaped Kuala Lumpur’s skyline.

Image

Three generations of the family inhabit the 3,000 square-meter residence designed to accommodate both private and public functions.

Image

The building includes nine bedrooms, two family rooms, a family kitchen and a private dining area, a family library, a game room, a study, a public reception area, a formal dining room, a ballroom, chapel, 21 bathrooms, a swimming pool, two guest suites plus indoor private and guest parking.

Image

The initial sketches exploring the owners’ usage requirements reveal resemblances to the boring stacked-boxes look still so ubiquitous in residential architecture. And while traces of the “heaped trailers” syndrome remain in the finished building, this is not the Jetsons, neither are we looking at EPCOT, Tomorrowland or the 1964 New York World’s Fair.

Image

We are in the lush vegetation of a posh Kuala Lumpur residential area, and in spite of the boxiness of the structure, an elegant circular softness manages to permeate the sightlines and key details of the building, making it an agreeable part of its landscape.

Image

Inside, prominent examples of this curvilinear elegance include the amazing staircases resembling the inside of a shell when viewed from above, and the round ballroom chandelier of 13,000 custom-designed undulating petals of unglazed cast porcelain biscuit.

Image

The curved walls both inside and out have a functional purpose of providing privacy and enclosing each function gently in its own space. The overall sweeping feel inside the spaces invites the viewer in and creates soft, arching vistas.

Image

The concept consists of three layers: the base for public functions, the ring for guests and the private house for the family.

Image

The inside of the magnificent residence is gorgeous with its high ceilings, large windows and abundance of light. White color and natural wood are dominant elements but they allow the view from the vast, mostly retractable, windows to remain the main visual attraction.

Image

The residence is also a wonderful study of contrasts between inside and outside, private and public, traditional and ultra modern, man-made and natural.

Image

YTL Design Group of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was the architect of record. The Agence Jouin Manku design team included Patrick Jouin, Sanjit Manku, Yann Brossier (architect), Richard Perron (designer). Officina del Paesaggio from Lugano, Switzerland was in charge of the landscape design, and L’Observatoire, New York, USA handled the lighting. – Tuija Seipell

Jom Skype!

Lowyat.NET : Malaysia’s Tech Enthusiast Resource Community – Malaysian can now SkypeOut using MOLePoints.

Skype and MOL Access Portal Berhad (MOL) today announced a collaboration that enables local Skype users to exchange their MOLePoints for Skype credits.

Previously Skype users could only pay for their credits using international credit cards, which for Malaysia is a problem as many of the internet payment gateways decline any locally issued credit cards due to high risk of fraud from this region.

However, due to this partnership, anyone can just drop by any of the 15,000 payment channels across the country to purchase MOLePoints e-vouchers. These include  any 7-Eleven stores, Pupular Bookstores, MOL CyberCafes, epay terminals and even most of the local banks’ internet banking sites.

Using the MOLePoints, one may exchange from a minimum of 5 Euros of Skype credits which comes up to around RM27-28 depending on the exchange rate set by MOL. The rate will be adjusted on a monthly basis which is presumed to be based on the current FOREX.

Skype credits are used to make SkypeOut calls. SkypeOut is a service for making calls to any landlines or mobile phones any where in the world. Considering the low cost for making SkypeOut calls, 5 Euros will last for quite a while as calls rates to USA, UK and Australia for example start from just 0.017 Euros or RM0.07 per minute.

You can start exchanging your MOLePoints for Skype credit starting from today. For more information, please visit www.mol.com/skype.

Now Malaysian can used the SkypeOut service using MOLePoints.

MySpace shrinks as Facebook, Twitter and Bebo grab its users

MySpace shrinks as Facebook, Twitter and Bebo grab its users.

MARCH 30 – The “Place for Friends” is starting to feel lonely. MySpace, the Rupert Murdoch-owned website once synonymous with social networking, is losing popularity and key staff in its biggest troubles since launching five years ago.

Latest figures show that Murdoch is being beaten in the fight for social networks. MySpace suffered a drop in visitor traffic last month and is now less than half the size of its younger rival, Facebook. Three executives recently quit the one-time darling of the Internet and there is speculation its co-founders will follow.

MySpace’s loss of status as the cool place to be is an object lesson in the notoriously fickle Internet, where today’s cultural icon is tomorrow’s passing fad.

Will ever MySpace make a “comeback” and take over the top?

We’ll see about that.

It a good competition anyway.

Let the best man wins.
